Tech Trials of India-Made GPUs to Begin in 2025, Launch Targeted for 2029

The first Made in India graphics processing units (GPUs) is expected to be ready for tech trial by the end of 2025 marking country’s major milestone in chip development. According to a report of Business Standard quoting government officials, these demonstrations will help assess the performance and commercial potential of the India-made GPUs. Full-scale production is likely to begin by 2029, with large-scale deployment planned by 2030.
These GPUs are being developed under the ₹10,372 crore IndiaAI Mission and are aimed at supporting high-performance computing tasks like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, scientific simulations, and complex mathematical processing. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is planning to reach out to global chipmakers and designers to support further development of these processors.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier confirmed the government’s commitment to creating indigenous chipsets, including GPUs, over the next few years. The initial response has been encouraging, with 10 companies placing bids to supply 18,693 GPUs — far exceeding the government’s target of 10,000. A second round has seen global firms, via Indian partners, expressing interest in supplying an additional 15,000 to 18,000 GPUs.
The empanelment process for GPU suppliers is ongoing and reviewed quarterly. In the first round, key players such as Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, and Yotta Data Services were selected alongside others like CMS Computers, E2E Networks, and Ctrls Datacentres. GPUs made by these companies will be supplied to startups, academic institutions, and researchers.
The government has also introduced incentives to boost GPU usage. It plans to offer a 40% discount on GPU rental rates for students, researchers, and startups. Additional discounts will be available for long-term users committing to six months or more. The subsidized rates will apply for the next four years.
Meanwhile, India is nearing the 50,000 GPU cap set by the United States. Government officials are holding high-level discussions with US counterparts to ease this restriction as part of broader trade talks.
