Electronics Emerges as India’s Third-Largest Export Sector, Government Eyes No. 2 Position
India’s electronics industry has achieved another major milestone, emerging as the country’s third-largest export category and strengthening its position as a global manufacturing hub.
Speaking at the inauguration of Jabil’s new advanced manufacturing facility in Pune, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government’s next objective is to elevate electronics to the second-largest export category in the country.
According to the minister, electronics exports have witnessed strong growth over the past few years, driven by rising smartphone production, expanding global supply chains, and policy initiatives aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing. Electronics has now surpassed several traditional export sectors and currently ranks behind only petroleum products and chemicals.
India’s domestic electronics manufacturing industry is estimated to have crossed ₹13 lakh crore, reflecting the rapid expansion of production capabilities across smartphones, telecom equipment, consumer electronics, IT hardware, and electronic components.
Recent trade data further highlights the sector’s momentum. Electronics exports reached approximately $5.17 billion during April-May FY2026, with smartphones accounting for nearly 74 percent of total electronics exports. Smartphone shipments alone contributed more than $3.4 billion during the period, underlining India’s growing importance in global mobile manufacturing.
The United States continues to be the largest destination for Indian electronics exports, accounting for a significant share of outbound shipments. Industry experts believe ongoing investments by global manufacturers, coupled with Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and supply-chain diversification efforts, will further accelerate export growth.
The inauguration of Jabil’s Pune facility is expected to strengthen India’s electronics ecosystem by supporting the manufacturing of advanced technology products and critical components. The facility will cater to sectors including AI data centres, telecommunications, railways, and industrial electronics.
With electronics exports continuing to register double-digit growth, India’s ambition of becoming a trusted manufacturing partner for the world appears increasingly within reach.
