Rare Earth Production to Get Nod Under ECMS, Boosting India’s Electronics Supply Chain
India ‘s dependence on imports, particularly from China is going pause as the country is set to take a significant step towards strengthening its electronics manufacturing ecosystem, with rare earth magnet production receiving approval under the Electronics components manufacturing scheme (ECMS). The country is going to support domestic production of critical components used across industries such as electric vehicles (EVs), consumer electronics, renewable energy, defence, aerospace, and semiconductors.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has approved a new batch of projects under ECMS, this will include India’s first manufacturing initiative for rare-earth permanent magnets from rare-earth oxides. India marks a major milestone in developing a comprehensive domestic electronics component ecosystem and improving supply chain resilience.
The new approvals involve 29 projects with an estimated investment of ₹7,104 crore. These projects are expected to generate production worth ₹84,515 crore and create approximately 14,200 direct employment. According to the government, these initiatives include a variety of important component categories, including surface-mount device (SMD) passives, battery equipment, and rare-earth magnets, all of which are required for next-generation electronics manufacturing.
Rare-earth permanent magnets are indispensable in high-performance applications because of their superior magnetic strength and energy efficiency. They are widely used in electric motors, wind turbines, industrial automation, smartphones, robotics, aerospace systems, defence platforms, and advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This growing global demand, coupled with recent supply chain disruptions, has highlighted the need for India to establish indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
According to government authorities, the permission marks a critical step in India’s transition from finished electronics assembly to core component manufacture. Along with rare-earth magnets, the approved projects will establish domestic manufacture of advanced SMD passive components, reducing reliance on foreign sources for crucial electronic components.
The ECMS is part of the government’s overall aim to boost domestic value creation and integrate Indian firms into global value chains. Officials stated that the program is assisting in the development of a comprehensive electronics manufacturing ecosystem, which includes finished products and modules, as well as sub-modules and high-value components.
The rare-earth effort compliments India’s overall critical minerals policy. The government has announced measures to accelerate exploration of rare earth elements, encourage private sector participation, and expand domestic rare-earth permanent magnet manufacturing capacity to support industries such as EVs, renewable energy, electronics, defence, and aerospace.
Industry experts believe the approval will strengthen India’s strategic autonomy in critical technologies while creating new investment opportunities across the electronics supply chain. Global manufacturers seek diversified sourcing traditional markets, domestic production of rare-earth magnets could enhance India’s competitiveness as a global electronics manufacturing hub and support the country’s ambition of becoming a trusted partner in advanced manufacturing.
