Kolkata: West Bengal is preparing to accelerate its presence in India’s rapidly expanding electronics manufacturing landscape by exploring opportunities under the central government’s modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) program. The move is aimed at creating world-class industrial infrastructure, attracting fresh investments, and strengthening the state’s position in the country’s technology manufacturing value chain.

Industry observers note that the initiative aligns with India’s broader ambition of building a globally competitive electronics ecosystem while reducing dependence on imports through deeper domestic manufacturing capabilities. Over the past few years, the Centre has introduced multiple policy measures and incentive programmes to encourage electronics production, component manufacturing, and supply chain localization.

West Bengal already possesses several strategic advantages, including established technology infrastructure, industrial parks, electronics-focused development agencies, and a large skilled workforce. Institutions such as the state-run electronics development corporation and dedicated electronics parks have created a foundation that could support future manufacturing investments.

The EMC 2.0 framework is designed to support the creation of modern manufacturing clusters by providing infrastructure that can attract electronics companies across multiple segments, including consumer electronics, telecom equipment, electronic components, and emerging technology products. Similar cluster-based development models have been deployed in other states to boost manufacturing activity and generate employment opportunities.

The development comes at a time when India’s electronics manufacturing sector continues to witness significant policy support and investment momentum. Recent approvals under various electronics manufacturing schemes have brought substantial investments into component production and supply chain development, reinforcing the country’s ambition to become a major global electronics hub.

Experts believe that if West Bengal successfully leverages the EMC 2.0 program, it could emerge as a key electronics manufacturing destination in eastern India, complementing the country’s growing network of electronics and semiconductor investments while creating new employment and export opportunities.
