Oppo, the Chinese smartphone maker, is reportedly looking to set up a manufacturing joint venture in India with Amber Group and Bhagwati Products as part of a larger restructuring plan to scale up its India operations and increase localization.

The move comes as global smartphone brands are fast-tracking their India manufacturing plans amid rising focus on domestic production, supply chain diversification, and tighter regulatory scrutiny.

Oppo is reportedly looking to boost its manufacturing ecosystem in India and simplify operations across its sister smartphone brands such as OnePlus and Realme.

In 2021, OnePlus merged its global operations with Oppo and Realme is now also believed to be aligning various operational functions with Oppo as the company works towards more efficiency and integration.

Concentrate on Local Manufacturing

Industry experts expect the proposed partnership to help Oppo develop its local manufacturing footprint and reduce dependence on imports. India has been gradually developing into a key production hub for smartphones, driven by government-led initiatives such as Make in India and production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes.

Oppo could also partner with Indian manufacturing players like Amber Group and Bhagwati Products to improve supply chain resilience and better comply with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Bhagwati Products is a well-known name in electronics manufacturing and has been actively involved in the assembly of smartphones and electronics manufacturing in India. Amber Group meanwhile has aggressively expanded beyond consumer durables into electronics manufacturing and components.

India is still a key market

India remains one of the most significant growth markets for smartphone brands as manufacturers now turn their focus to local manufacturing, exports and ecosystem development.

Oppo’s rejigging efforts indicate a strategic move towards greater localization, operational consolidation, and long-term manufacturing partnerships in India’s fast-growing electronics space.

With competition heating up in the Indian smartphone market, manufacturing capabilities, local sourcing, and strategic tie-ups will be the focus for companies to bolster their market presence.
