India Emerges as World’s Leading Target for Cyberattacks in 2025

India has become the most targeted nation for cyberattacks, surpassing Brazil and Spain, according to the Acronis Cyberthreats Report for the first half of 2025. The report revealed that 12.4% of Windows-based devices in India detected malware in May, which further rose to 13.2% in June — the highest figures worldwide. Malware, a malicious software used to gain unauthorized access to systems, is at the center of these attacks.

The report warns that India’s digital landscape is facing a “perfect storm” of cyber risks, with business email compromise cases increasing sharply from 20% in early 2024 to 25.6% in the first half of 2025. Cybercriminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to design sophisticated phishing emails, fake invoices, and even deepfake scams, making them harder to identify.

Acronis noted that hybrid work models and insecure remote networks have left organizations vulnerable, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, IT services, and telecom. Ransomware groups such as Cl0p, Akira, and Qilin are also intensifying attacks, often using legitimate remote tools to spread malware.

The report stressed that with India now the world’s top cyberattack hotspot, companies must go beyond prevention and focus on resilience, rapid detection, and recovery.
