Tata, Tower Semiconductor Lead Race for Mohali Chip Plant Upgrade

Tata Semiconductor and Israel-based Tower Semiconductor have reportedly emerged as the leading contenders for a ₹4,000 crore project to revamp the government-run Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali. According to a report by Mint, the two companies were shortlisted from nearly a dozen applicants based on their technical capabilities. They will now compete in the financial bidding phase to determine the final awardee.
The winning company will be responsible for modernizing the plant’s existing 180 nm chip fabrication line, adding advanced equipment to enhance research and manufacturing capabilities. The project includes the replacement of outdated machinery and the commissioning of new systems to scale up production.
This development is part of India’s broader push to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem and reduce reliance on imports. If successful, the upgraded SCL facility in Mohali could play a critical role in India’s goal of becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing and innovation.
