Global technology leader Lenovo is betting big on India as a key growth engine, aiming to double its business in the country over the next three years. The company is leveraging strong growth in its Motorola smartphone segment, as well as high double-digit expansion in infrastructure, services, and solutions. Lenovo Asia Pacific President Amar Babu told PTI in an interview that India’s domestic consumption and the “India for the world” innovation strategy will be central to the company’s expansion plans.
“Lenovo in India is a growth story, and the opportunity exists to sustain that growth across all our businesses,” Babu said. “Our Motorola business has performed exceptionally well, with revenues more than doubling over the past two years. Our infrastructure business and services and solutions divisions are also growing in high double digits. With the right level of innovation and investment, we aim to double our business in India over the next three years.” He emphasized that India is not just a market but a global innovation hub, with Lenovo designing mainstream servers locally and developing significant software for Motorola phones within the country.
Lenovo India is among the fastest-growing markets for the company worldwide, registering growth of over 20 percent. Babu highlighted that the company’s focus on local talent and infrastructure has been a key driver of this momentum. “When a business grows, we add resources and infrastructure ahead of the curve. India’s talent pool is incredibly attractive, and we leverage it not only for India operations but also for Lenovo’s global operations,” he explained. This approach, he noted, ensures that Lenovo continues to strengthen its local ecosystem while delivering solutions that can compete on a global scale.
The company has seen strong performance across its business verticals, driven by rising digitization, premiumization, and favorable consumer sentiment following tax reforms like the GST rejig. Lenovo India reported a 23 percent year-on-year revenue increase to USD 1.2 billion in the September quarter, underscoring robust demand across its product portfolio. The surge in Motorola smartphone sales has been a particularly notable contributor, reflecting the brand’s growing acceptance in both urban and semi-urban markets.
Lenovo’s plans for India also involve strategic investment in artificial intelligence, advanced services, and enterprise infrastructure solutions. By building innovation and R&D capabilities within India, the company is positioning the country as a center for developing solutions for global markets. Babu emphasized that this strategy aligns with Lenovo’s broader vision of “India for India, and India for the world,” ensuring that India is not just a consumer market but a source of cutting-edge technology and talent.
Looking ahead, Lenovo is committed to scaling its workforce and infrastructure to support sustained growth. The company plans to hire proactively, build high-quality talent pipelines, and continue investing in research and development. By combining local innovation with global expertise, Lenovo aims to strengthen its leadership position in India while contributing to the country’s technology ecosystem.
With a robust growth trajectory, strategic investments in AI, smartphones, and infrastructure, and a strong focus on talent and innovation, Lenovo is charting a bold roadmap to make India a cornerstone of its global expansion strategy. The company’s ambitious plans underscore India’s rising importance in the global tech landscape and its potential to drive next-generation innovation.
