Intel introduced its next-generation laptop processor, Panther Lake, at the CES trade show in Las Vegas, marking an important step in the company’s effort to strengthen confidence in its advanced chip manufacturing strategy. The new processor is Intel’s first major product built using its in-house 18A manufacturing process, which features a redesigned transistor structure and a new power delivery method aimed at improving efficiency and performance.

Jim Johnson, senior vice president and head of Intel’s PC business, shared details of the first Panther Lake lineup, called Intel Core Ultra Series 3, and said these chips are designed to deliver a significant leap over earlier models. According to Intel, the new processors offer up to 60% better performance compared to the previous Lunar Lake Series 2 chips, which were largely produced by external foundry partner TSMC.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the launch fulfills the company’s commitment to ship products made with the 18A process in 2025. Intel is also introducing a separate graphics chiplet within Panther Lake, allowing better scalability and performance. The company plans to use the Panther Lake platform for upcoming handheld gaming PCs as well. While Intel has faced challenges with manufacturing yields in the past, executives said production quality is improving steadily ahead of the full market launch.
