India Hosts Historic 3GPP Meetings to Shape Global 6G Standards

India has created history by hosting the 3GPP Radio Access Networks (RAN) Working Group meetings for the very first time in Bengaluru. The event, inaugurated on August 25 and continuing until August 29, 2025, marks the beginning of global discussions on 3GPP Release 20, which will lay the foundation for 6G standardization. At the same time, work is underway on finalizing Release 19, a critical step in advancing 5G Advanced technologies.

The meetings are being organized with full support from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, and hosted by the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI). This milestone underscores India’s growing leadership in global telecommunications and its active participation in shaping the next generation of wireless standards. For the government, extending both financial and institutional backing highlights its strong commitment to building a future-ready digital ecosystem.

With over 1,500 delegates from more than 50 countries, this gathering has recorded the highest-ever participation in any 3GPP working group meeting. Participants include leading telecom companies, researchers, and technical experts, reflecting the significance of these deliberations in charting the evolution from 5G to 6G.

For Indian stakeholders, the Bengaluru meetings provide a unique opportunity to engage with global experts directly from home soil. Researchers, companies, and academic institutions can contribute actively without the barriers of international travel, ensuring that India’s voice is strongly represented in the global standard-setting process.
