Dutch semiconductor company NXP is planning to set up a new research and development centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, as part of its $1 billion investment plan in India. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the company is exploring land in the Semiconductor Park located in Sector 10 of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region. NXP’s top leadership is reportedly in discussions with YEIDA officials to acquire land for building R&D, innovation, and lab facilities.

This development marks the first major step in NXP CEO Kurt Sievers’s India expansion strategy, announced during Semicon India 2024. Sievers also met the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and later held follow-up discussions in October 2024. A government official mentioned that the decision to move forward came after strong encouragement from the state government at Semicon India.

At the event, Sievers shared NXP’s vision to strengthen its R&D presence in India, focusing on hardware, software, and emerging technologies like its new 5-nanometer automotive chip. The company aims to double its India workforce to over 6,000 in five years, with design engineers playing a central role. Currently, over 80% of NXP’s 3,000 India-based employees are design professionals.

Moneycontrol noted that NXP India did not respond to their query.

Meanwhile, Greater Noida is becoming a key semiconductor hub, with HCL and Foxconn also setting up a Rs 3,700 crore plant.
