Tata Looks to Double iPhone Casing Output at Hosur Plant

Tata Electronics is looking forward to increase the production capacity of Apple iPhone casings from 50,000 to 100,000 units at its Hosur Plant in Tamil Nadu. This expansion comes ahead of Apple’s annual product launches in September and marks Phase II of the facility’s growth. The plant had earlier reached 50,000 units but faced a setback due to a fire in September last year. Operations have since recovered to pre-fire levels.

This move aligns with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s recent comments about India playing a bigger role in Apple’s manufacturing. He had said that most of the iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter are expected to be made in India. Apple is shifting parts of its supply chain away from China to reduce risks due to trade tensions.

Tata is becoming a significant part of Apple’s supply network. The company had acquired a 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India while earlier it took over Wistron’s operations in Karnataka. These acquisitions reflect Tata’s growing ambitions in electronics manufacturing and its strategic importance to Apple.

Apart from Tata, other suppliers of Apple are also increasing their presence in India. Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer, is building a new factory in Bengaluru and has opened a unit in Hyderabad to make AirPods. These developments indicate a clear shift by Apple to expand and secure its supply chain through deeper investments in India.
