Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal recently met Tim Archer, President and CEO of Lam Research, to discuss the company’s growth plans in India and opportunities to strengthen the nation’s semiconductor ecosystem. The discussions focused on research and development, design, manufacturing, and workforce skilling—key areas that will help India emerge as a global semiconductor hub.
Lam Research, a US-based semiconductor equipment manufacturer, had earlier announced an investment of over ₹10,000 crore in India, marking a significant step in supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a leader in chip manufacturing. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the investment as a major vote of confidence in India’s semiconductor journey.
As part of its expansion, Lam Research has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Karnataka government to secure land at Whitefield in Bengaluru, where the company plans to set up operations. This aligns with the broader goal of building a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which has approved five projects worth ₹76,000 crore.
India’s semiconductor market is projected to reach USD 103.4 billion by 2030, supporting the country’s USD 400 billion electronics sector. Government incentives, global partnerships, and training initiatives are expected to accelerate growth. Lam Research is also working to address the talent gap by introducing virtual nano-fabrication and training programs, further strengthening India’s semiconductor workforce and its role in the global value chain.
