Nvidia has announced DLSS 5, the latest generation of its AI-powered graphics engine designed to replicate movie graphics in real-time gaming. Revealed at the company’s GTC event, the news brings a neural rendering upgrade that dramatically improves lighting, textures and materials with stunning realism while retaining low-impact gameplay performance.

The new system uses AI to analyse individual frames, including colour and motion data, and reconstruct visual elements like interactions with light, reflections and fabric textures. This allows for greater fidelity in rendering characters, environments and dynamic scenes without a penalization of frame rates, even at resolutions as high as 4K.

Previous versions deliver performance increases through upscaling, but DLSS 5 embraces visual fidelity instead. It combines traditional rendering techniques with generative AI to deliver consistent, high-quality imagery across frames. Developers will also gain more creative control, allowing them to fine-tune effects like intensity, colour, and selective enhancements.

First launched in 2018, DLSS has already been adopted in hundreds of titles. With DLSS 5, Nvidia is targeting deeper integration across major upcoming games, reinforcing its push to redefine real-time graphics and narrow the gap between gaming visuals and film-quality production standards.
