MediaTek, one of the world’s top fabless semiconductor companies, will start producing its advanced 2-nanometer chips in September 2025. This development will make MediaTek the first to mass-produce chips smaller than the current 3nm industry standard, signaling a big step forward in chip efficiency and performance. The announcement was made by Rick Tsai, MediaTek’s Vice Chairman and CEO, at the Computex 2025 technology event.
These 2nm chips are expected to be used in smartphones and custom-designed chips, offering better power efficiency and higher performance. According to Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak, this milestone reflects MediaTek’s growing partnership with TSMC and its increasing strength in custom chip development.
Beyond chip miniaturization, MediaTek is also focusing on the future of wireless technology. Tsai emphasized that the company is preparing for the 6G era, combining its chip-making experience with artificial intelligence to deliver advanced connectivity solutions.
Additionally, MediaTek introduced its high-end Kompanio Ultra chip, made with TSMC’s 3nm process. Designed for premium Chromebooks, it offers powerful AI processing and up to 20 hours of battery life.
These innovations show MediaTek’s strong commitment to cutting-edge technologies and its rising position in the global semiconductor market. The 2nm chip launch in September will be a major industry milestone.
