India Overtakes China in Smartphone Exports to US, Boosting Make in India

India has surpassed China in smartphone exports to the United States, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s manufacturing growth. According to data from research firm Canalys, cited by PIB, India’s share of smartphones imported by the US jumped to 44% between April and June 2025, up sharply from 13% in the same quarter last year. In contrast, China’s share dropped significantly from 61% to just 25% during the same period.

This shift has been largely driven by government initiatives such as Make in India and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which have encouraged global smartphone makers to scale up their local production. The report highlights how India, once not seen as a key manufacturing hub, is now emerging as a global leader in the electronics sector.

Over the past decade, India’s electronics and mobile manufacturing industry has transformed remarkably. Mobile phone production has surged from ₹18,000 crore in 2014-15 to ₹5.45 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports have grown 127 times, from ₹1,500 crore to ₹2 lakh crore. The number of mobile manufacturing units has also expanded from just two in 2014-15 to 300 in 2025. Import dependence has nearly vanished, falling from 75% to just 0.02%.
