India has expressed its willingness to share its artificial intelligence (AI) models with the Global South, signalling a collaborative approach to inclusive AI development. Speaking at the FICCI Bhashantara 2025 conference, S Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, highlighted India’s strength in building AI systems that work in complex, multilingual environments. He noted that if AI can be developed effectively in India, it can be adapted to work almost anywhere in the world.

This openness stems from growing global interest, especially from UN agencies, in India’s unique AI development strategies. Krishnan highlighted the India AI Mission’s key initiatives like AI Kosh, a repository with over 400 datasets, and flagship programs such as Mission Bhashini and Anuvadini, which aim to support AI innovation in regional and underrepresented languages.

India is also digitising traditional knowledge systems like Ayurveda and ancient manuscripts to develop datasets for global use. Unlike many countries that rely only on state or corporate funding, India promotes multi-stakeholder engagement, involving academia, industry, and research.

At the event, Google’s Harsh Dhand urged the government to unlock historical data, expand the “Make in India” vision, and better connect research entities. Industry leaders pledged support through technology access, funding, and skilling efforts.

The conference also celebrated India’s progress in making the internet accessible in all official Indian languages, unlocking massive opportunities for economic growth in a world where most people don’t speak English as a primary language.
