India’s ambition to build a strong semiconductor ecosystem gained momentum as Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw praised recent strides in chip manufacturing. Calling it a critical step toward making India a “product nation,” the minister highlighted the government’s focus on developing indigenous chipsets with intellectual property (IP) owned within the country.

The minister, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized the role of the Semiconductor Mission and the Design Linked Incentives (DLI) scheme, which supports startups in chip design and innovation. He pointed to Mindgrove Technologies, a fabless semiconductor startup incubated at IIT-Madras, as a prime example of how policy support and innovation are converging to produce secure Internet of Things (IoT) chips. Founded in 2021, Mindgrove has designed chips for devices including CCTV cameras and industrial applications under Industry 4.0.

Mindgrove recently placed its first large-scale manufacturing order with its foundry partner, marking a key milestone for India’s semiconductor industry. The startup had earlier secured ₹15 crore under the DLI scheme to develop its Vision SoC product line. With such initiatives, India is steadily building its semiconductor capability, aiming to strengthen self-reliance, drive exports, and establish itself as a global hub for chip design and manufacturing.
