India and Japan Boost Cooperation in Semiconductors and AI Growth

Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to deepen technological cooperation with India, especially in semiconductors and artificial intelligence, during a bilateral meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in South Africa and lasted around 35 minutes. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Takaichi on assuming office, while she thanked him and also expressed condolences for the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Delhi.

Prime Minister Takaichi stressed her intention to strengthen Japan-India relations and deliver concrete outcomes under the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade. She highlighted areas such as security, defence, economic cooperation, and people-to-people ties as key priorities. Importantly, she emphasised the need to harness the strengths of both countries to drive innovation in critical and emerging technologies, including chip manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and other strategic tech sectors. She also outlined Japan’s aim to work closely with India on economic security.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed Japan’s commitment and expressed India’s readiness to advance collaboration across these sectors. Both leaders also agreed to work together in supporting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, recognising the importance of their partnership for regional and global stability.

The meeting reflected the strong and trusted relationship between India and Japan, with both sides agreeing to maintain close contact and meet again soon. During his visit to Johannesburg from November 22–23, Prime Minister Modi also participated in various G20 sessions and met other world leaders.
