Google on Wednesday officially opened its first Safety Engineering Centre in Hyderabad. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and IT Minister D Sridhar Babu inaugurated the facility, which is the first Safety Engineering Centre in the Asia-Pacific region. The new facility is company’s fourth such centre across the globe. It has been named the Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) India.
The centre aims to strengthen digital safety across India, especially as the country rapidly adopts AI-driven technologies. GSEC India will focus on three major areas—protecting users from online scams, enhancing cybersecurity for both government and private sectors, and ensuring responsible development and use of AI.
GSEC India will use advanced tools like Gemini Nano to deliver real-time scam alerts on Android devices and enhance Google Play Protect’s security capabilities. It will also work on detecting fraud in platforms such as Gmail, Google Search, and Google Pay. Technologies like SynthID will help identify AI-generated fake content to combat misinformation.
In addition to product development, the centre will collaborate with institutions like IIT-Madras to support research, promote cybersecurity awareness, and build tools that work in multiple Indian languages. This initiative reflects Google’s commitment to making the internet safer and more secure for India’s rapidly growing digital population.
