China Resumes Exports of Fertilizers, Rare Earths and Tunneling Equipment to India

In a significant development for India’s trade and infrastructure sectors, China has lifted export restrictions on fertilizers, rare earth minerals, and tunnel boring machines. These were three major concerns raised by New Delhi during recent talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. According to reports, shipments of these critical items have already started reaching India.
The restrictions had caused major challenges across multiple sectors. Fertilizer curbs created shortages of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) during the Rabi season, putting pressure on farmers. Delays in importing tunnel boring machines slowed down key infrastructure projects, particularly those relying on equipment manufactured in China. The auto and electronics industries were also hit hard due to the lack of rare earth supplies, which are essential for manufacturing.
The decision to ease curbs comes after two rounds of discussions between Jaishankar and Wang last month, where both sides agreed to gradually normalise relations following troop disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This move is expected to boost trade confidence and reduce supply chain disruptions at a time when India is also navigating global trade pressures.
