BIS Standards for Cloud, AI and Data Centres to Boost Quality in India

The introduction of new standards by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for data centres, cloud computing systems and artificial intelligence ethics is expected to improve quality benchmarks and bring greater uniformity to India’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem. Although the guidelines are voluntary, officials say they will serve as a reference framework for companies operating in these emerging sectors.

The standards arrive at a time when the government is accelerating investments in digital infrastructure. The Government of India recently announced a tax holiday for data centres in the Union Budget 2026–27, a move aimed at attracting large-scale investments and strengthening the country’s AI and cloud infrastructure.

The BIS notification, issued on February 25, establishes common definitions for cloud systems, introduces performance indicators for data centres, and outlines ethical guidelines for designing AI technologies. These measures are expected to support the expansion of India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem by ensuring consistent quality standards across the industry.

Officials believe the voluntary norms will act as a benchmark to prevent substandard products from entering the market, particularly as demand for data centre hardware and cloud infrastructure grows. The rules are aligned with international standards set by organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Industry leaders have largely welcomed the move, noting that standardised frameworks can help businesses adopt AI solutions at scale by reducing uncertainty around security, compliance and system performance.

With India expecting investments of over $250 billion in AI-related infrastructure in the coming years, experts believe such standardisation will play a critical role in ensuring quality, interoperability and global alignment across the country’s digital technology landscape.
