Dixon Technologies is about to kick off trial runs at its brand-new ₹1,100-crore display manufacturing plant in Greater Noida this June. This is a pretty big leap in India’s drive to deepen its electronics manufacturing scene. The plant’s set up to crank out up to 84 million displays a year, breaking down into 60 million for mobile phones and 24 million for IT hardware.

Sunil Vachani, the Chairman, talked to Moneycontrol about the impact, saying the new facility should push local value addition in electronics. Right now, domestic value addition in mobile production sits at about 18 percent. With displays and camera modules now being made in India, that figure could jump to nearly 40 percent, much more than what we’re seeing.

This move follows a recent government approval under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), letting Dixon Display Technologies make display modules locally. The whole idea matches up with India’s bigger plan to cut down on imports and beef up its own component ecosystem.

The plant will use some pretty advanced tech such as chip-on-glass, film-on-glass, polarisation, bonding, and glass cutting. India doesn’t have many facilities with these capabilities yet, so it’s a step toward building a strong, self-sufficient electronics supply chain.

Vachani made it clear that Dixon’s trying to go way beyond just assembling products. The company wants to grow its product range, level up quality standards, and ramp up operations not just in India, but globally. They’re also scaling up in camera module manufacturing, looking at almost 100 million units a year.

He called the ECMS a timely move. India may have reached impressive production volumes, but the next big step is having stronger, homegrown component manufacturing. Vachani backed the government’s push on quality, skills, and design, saying those are key if India wants to compete globally.

With electronics exports closing in on $50 billion, Dixon’s expansion really highlights how India is shifting from being just an assembly hub to becoming a real manufacturing powerhouse that adds value.
