India and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to conclude a comprehensive and balanced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. This decision was made during a high-level meeting between India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič. Their discussions focused on addressing global trade challenges and advancing mutual economic interests.

The push for the FTA has come after the strategic direction set by PM Modi and European Commission Presiden Ursula von der Leyen met during the EU College of Commissioners’ visit to New Delhi in February this year.

Both sides agreed that the FTA should be fair, forward-looking, and promote inclusive growth, with regular monthly negotiation rounds and continuous virtual engagement to keep the momentum. They highlighted progress in several negotiation areas and emphasized the need to resolve pending issues with mutual respect and practical solutions.

India stressed that tackling non-tariff barriers is as important as tariff discussions, and regulatory measures should support trade without becoming restrictive.

The FTA aims to reflect today’s global trade needs by encouraging digital transformation, strengthening supply chains, and enhancing cooperation in innovation and regulation.

Once finalized, the agreement is expected to boost market access, promote investment, and deepen the strategic India-EU partnership. It aligns with India’s long-term development goals and its vision of becoming a “Vishwa Mitra”, a trusted global partner promoting fair trade and sustainable economic ties.
