Samsung Electronics has announced a significant investment of ₹1,000 crore (around $117 million) in its manufacturing facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The news was shared by T. R. B. Rajaa, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce. The move is seen as a positive step toward strengthening the company’s operations in India and shows renewed confidence in the local workforce.

The plant had previously faced labour unrest, including a sit-in protest in February following employee suspensions and a five-week strike last September demanding better wages and union recognition. Despite ongoing tensions between the workers’ union and Samsung, the company plans to expand the facility and add 100 new jobs.

The minister also said that the decision of South Korean company shows trusts in Tamil Nadu’s labour environment. The facility currently employs over 2,000 people and manufactures products such as refrigerators, TVs, and washing machines. In the financial year 2022–23, this plant contributed around 20% of Samsung’s $12 billion sales in India. The timeline for the investment is yet to be disclosed however it reflects company’s commitment towards India’s electronics manufacturing growth.
