Apple Overtakes Samsung to Lead Global Smartphone Market in Q1 2025

Apple has become world’s leading smartphone brand in the first quarter of 2025 leaving behind Samsung, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. The global smartphone market saw a modest 3% growth year-over-year, driven mainly by rising demand in emerging markets like China, Latin America, and the Middle East. In contrast, developed regions such as North America and Europe reported slower growth.
Apple’s success is largely credited to the strong performance of the iPhone 16e, which gained popularity even in markets where Apple previously had a smaller share. Despite a slowdown in the latter part of the quarter due to global economic uncertainties and trade issues, Apple managed to take the top spot in market share.
Samsung, which now holds 18% of the market, came in second. The delayed launch of the Galaxy S25 series impacted its early performance, but the brand rebounded in March with strong sales, particularly of the “Ultra” models. Xiaomi continued to expand its presence, especially in developing markets, while Vivo moved into the fourth position and OPPO was placed at fifth position as it registered solid sales in India and Latin America.
Other brands such as Huawei, HONOR, and Motorola also gained traction.
While the market shows signs of stability, challenges like economic instability and trade tensions may affect future growth. Still, innovation in foldables and AI features is expected to keep the smartphone race exciting through the rest of the year.
