The Indian government has announced the removal of import duties on essential components used in manufacturing electric vehicle (EV) batteries and mobile phones. This move is part of a broader strategy to support local producers and counter potential trade impacts from reciprocal U.S. tariffs.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that 35 EV battery components and 28 mobile phone parts will now be exempt from import duties. The initiative aims to boost domestic manufacturing, enhance global competitiveness, and strengthen India’s export potential.
India is also engaged in discussions with the United States to resolve tariff issues and finalize a bilateral trade agreement. Reports suggest New Delhi may lower tariffs on over half of $23 billion worth of U.S. imports as part of the negotiations.
The decision follows recommendations from a parliamentary committee urging lower import tariffs to support local industries.
