TSMC Commits $100 Billion to U.S. Chip Expansion, Backed by Trump

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will invest $100 billion in expanding semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., former President Donald Trump announced on Monday. Calling TSMC the “most powerful company in the world,” Trump emphasized the move as a major step toward boosting America’s chip production.

This investment brings TSMC’s total U.S. commitment to $165 billion, funding the construction of five new fabrication plants in Arizona. The expansion aligns with Trump’s push to make the U.S. a global leader in artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing.

Trump has consistently advocated for reshoring semiconductor production, citing economic and national security concerns. Last month, he unveiled a multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure project with Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank to further U.S. technological dominance.

TSMC, which supplies chips to industry leaders like Nvidia and Apple, has been steadily growing its U.S. presence. In 2020, it pledged $12 billion for its first Arizona factory, later increasing the investment to $65 billion for additional facilities. The company has also secured a $6.6 billion subsidy from the U.S. Commerce Department.

A spokesperson for Nvidia while talking to CNBC welcomed the expansion, stating that TSMC’s U.S. investments will enhance supply chain resilience and agility.
