Tesla Begins Hiring in India, Indicating Market Entry Plans

Tesla Inc., the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has initiated hiring in India, signaling its long-anticipated entry into the market. According to a Bloomberg report, the company has posted job openings for 13 roles across customer service, sales, and operations, with positions available in Mumbai and Delhi.

The hiring spree follows a recent meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States. Notably, Tesla had previously refrained from entering India due to high import duties. However, with India lowering customs duties on high-end EVs priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, the market has become more attractive for global players like Tesla.

India’s EV sector remains in its early stages, with only 100,000 electric cars sold last year compared to China’s 11 million. Despite this, the Indian market presents a growth opportunity for Tesla amid declining global sales.

Tesla’s expansion into India aligns with the country’s push for sustainable mobility and manufacturing under initiatives like “Make in India” and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme.
