MeitY Industry Meet Boosts Innovation in Rechargeable Battery Technology for India’s Future

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) hosted an industry meet to accelerate the development of Rechargeable Battery Technology (RBT) in India. The event, led by MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan, highlighted the progress of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Rechargeable Battery Technology at CMET, Pune. The CoE focuses on advancing indigenous technologies for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-polymer batteries, with applications in electric vehicles (EVs), mobile devices, and electronics.
The meet was attended by prominent industry associations, including ELCINA, IESA, and ICEA, as well as major companies like Tata Chemicals, Exide, Ola Electric, and Boat. These organizations expressed strong interest in partnering with MeitY to enhance R&D efforts and drive innovation in battery manufacturing. Shri Krishnan emphasized the importance of industry-driven research to meet the growing demand for commercial battery technologies.
Three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the event. The collaborations were formed with Watthour Private Limited for sodium-ion technology, Ampere Green Material for lithium-ion, and Brandwork Technologies Pvt Ltd for lithium-ion, marking a significant step towards scaling up India’s manufacturing capabilities in the fast-growing battery segment.
