Lenovo Plans to Double Local Production in India

Lenovo aims to significantly increase its local production in India, targeting over 12 million units for smartphones and laptops in the 2024-25 fiscal year, doubling the 6.4 million units produced in 2023-24. The company is expanding its production capabilities following its participation in India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and government encouragement for global brands to ramp up manufacturing in the country.
Lenovo India’s Managing Director, Shailendra Katyal, shared that the company is preparing to produce nearly all its personal computer models locally after achieving 100% local production for its Motorola smartphones. In FY23, Lenovo produced 5 million units in India. The company also plans to increase local production by 40% in the following fiscal year.
Currently, Lenovo manufactures laptops and desktops at its Puducherry plant and is set to begin producing artificial intelligence servers there. Its contract manufacturer, Dixon Technologies, produces Motorola smartphones, tablets, and laptops, including for export markets like North America. Despite a dip in Lenovo’s sales in FY24, the company has reported a strong recovery in the first half of FY25.
