India has significantly advanced in global electronics value chains and innovation, particularly over the last 4-5 years, driven by the Union government’s focus on export-led manufacturing, according to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, former Union Minister of State for IT.

Speaking at the Times Network’s Digit Zero1 Awards 2024, Chandrasekhar pointed out that India’s electronics manufacturing sector has undergone a significant transformation. A decade ago, domestic brands relied on Chinese manufacturing for their products. However, in the past 3-4 years, global and Indian brands are not only manufacturing in India but also designing products for local production.

This shift from import substitution to an export-led manufacturing framework has been facilitated by government policies, he said. Chandrasekhar also emphasized three key trends to watch: India’s growing role in global value chains post-Covid, the rise of AI-powered digital products, and innovations in chip architectures. With advancements in local AI and new chip technologies, India is poised to redefine electronics innovation across industries like automotive, industrial, and consumer tech.
