Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates Syrma SGS Technology’s State-of-the-Art Assembly Line in Chennai

India’s IT hardware manufacturing industry has marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of Syrma SGS Technology’s laptop assembly line in Chennai, led by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This facility, under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme, signifies India’s expansion into the global laptop manufacturing sector, complementing its success in mobile phone production.
Located in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), this state-of-the-art line will initially produce 100,000 laptops annually, with a future capacity of up to 1 million units. The project is set to create 150-200 specialized jobs in electronics manufacturing by 2026, boosting both Tamil Nadu’s and India’s economy. With global partner Micro-Star International (MSI), the laptops will meet international standards, enhancing India’s competitive edge in high-value electronics production.
This development is a key component of India’s broader vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) and highlights Tamil Nadu’s role as a hub for electronics manufacturing, contributing 30% of India’s electronics exports. The PLI 2.0 scheme is catalyzing a transformation in India’s IT hardware sector, with projected investments of ₹3,000 crore and the creation of 47,000 jobs. India’s goal to reduce import dependency and increase exports of IT hardware is steadily taking shape.
