PM Modi Advocates for Open-Source AI and Ethical AI Governance at Paris AI Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for open-source artificial intelligence (AI) systems with unbiased datasets at the AI Action Summit in Paris on February 11. Co-chaired by India, France, and Canada, the summit focuses on AI governance, reinforcing global cooperation on AI policies.
Building Trustworthy AI Systems
PM Modi underscored the importance of trust and transparency in AI, advocating for open-source AI models and high-quality, bias-free datasets. He stressed the need to democratize AI by ensuring its development is people-centric and rooted in local ecosystems to make it effective and accessible.
Sustainable AI: The Need for Efficiency
Highlighting AI’s high energy consumption, Modi urged for green and energy-efficient AI models. He noted that sustainability is not just about clean energy sources but also about optimizing data processing and resource efficiency.
Comparing AI with human intelligence, Modi remarked that the human brain can compose poetry and design spaceships while consuming less power than a light bulb, stressing the need for AI models to achieve similar efficiency.
Tackling AI-Driven Challenges
Addressing AI-related risks, Modi called for strong cybersecurity frameworks to counter disinformation, deepfakes, and cyber threats. He also acknowledged concerns about job displacement due to AI but highlighted that technology historically creates new job opportunities rather than eliminating work.
“We need to invest in skilling and reskilling our workforce to prepare for an AI-driven future,” he stated.
India’s AI Leadership: Building a Large Language Model (LLM)
PM Modi highlighted India’s growing AI talent pool and ongoing initiatives, including the development of a large-language model (LLM) tailored to India’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
On January 30, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced India’s plans to build a Generative AI model, positioning the country alongside global players like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek. This initiative will be powered by the India AI Compute Facility, which has secured 18,693 GPUs for AI research.
“We have a unique public-private partnership model to pool resources like computing power,” Modi noted. Under the India AI Mission, the government is prioritizing a shared AI infrastructure to drive ethical and inclusive AI advancements.
Reassuring the global community, Modi dismissed fears of AI surpassing human intelligence, stating, “Only humans hold the key to our collective future. Our responsibility must guide AI’s development.”
