In a significant move towards enhancing consumer rights and promoting sustainability, the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), Government of India, has established a committee led by Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary of DoCA, to develop a robust Repairability Index for the mobile and electronics sector. This initiative aims to empower consumers by providing transparent repair information and encouraging sustainable practices within the tech industry.

The Repairability Index will serve as a consumer-centric metric, allowing individuals to make informed purchasing decisions based on a product’s repairability. By standardizing how repairability is assessed, consumers can easily compare products, fostering an ecosystem of informed choices.

Key elements of the proposed Repair Ecosystem include comprehensive access to repair information, timely availability of spare parts, affordable tools, modular design, and economic feasibility.
