Government Ensures Safe and Trusted AI through Legal Safeguards
Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology in a written reply in Lok Sabha said that the Government is implementing robust measures to ensure the safety and trustworthiness of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Under the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021, intermediaries, including social media platforms, are legally bound to remove prohibited misinformation, deep fakes, and false information. These rules were updated in 2022 and 2023 to strengthen accountability.
Platforms failing to comply lose their safe harbor protection under the IT Act. Additionally, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, mandates data fiduciaries to protect personal data, ensuring users’ rights.
