Construction of Tata’s Semiconductor Unit Begins in Assam

Tata Sons has officially commenced construction on its semiconductor unit in Assam, marking a major step towards strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem. With a total investment of INR27,000 crores, the project is expected to create 15,000 direct and 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs, bolstering employment in upstream and downstream industries.
The project aligns with India’s Act East Policy, as emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reiterated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The Minister highlighted the facility’s importance in advancing semiconductor packaging technologies such as Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and I-SIP, all of which are being developed indigenously. These technologies will be critical for key sectors, including automotive (particularly electric vehicles), communications, and network infrastructure.
The semiconductor unit will have the capacity to produce 4.83 crore chips per day. Its establishment in Assam underscores the region’s growing significance in India’s high-tech manufacturing landscape, especially under the national push for self-reliance in semiconductor production.
In parallel with the construction, India is training an industry-ready workforce, with 85,000 students from 113 academic institutions specializing in semiconductor chip design at the B.Tech, M.Tech, and PhD levels. Nine of these institutions are located in the North-East, further contributing to the region’s development.
