Celebrating a Decade of Make in India: Transforming Electronics and Semiconductor Landscape

On the 10th anniversary of the Make in India initiative, S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), underscored the program’s pivotal role in revolutionizing the electronics sector.
Since 2014-15, production has surged from INR 1.9 lakh crore to INR 9.52 lakh crore, with exports witnessing an impressive growth rate of 22.7%. Today, an astonishing 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are domestically manufactured, reflecting a remarkable transformation from just 26% a decade ago.
The mobile phone export sector has also flourished, rising from INR 1,566 crore in 2014-15 to approximately INR 1,20,000 crore in 2023-24, marking a 77-fold increase. This success is largely attributed to the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has generated over 1.2 million jobs in the electronics sector.
Additionally, the India Semiconductor Mission aims to establish a robust semiconductor manufacturing base, a crucial step for the future of India’s electronics industry.
